► (1900-1983) Realizador cinematográfico español, nacionalizado mexicano. Vinculado a la generación del 27, se trasladó a París y en colaboración con Salvador Dalí realizó su primera película surrealista (V. surrealismo): El perro andaluz (1928). De su etapa mexicana destacan Los olvidados (1950), Nazarín (1958) y Viridiana (1961). Instalado de nuevo en París dirigió Diario de una camarera (1963), Belle de jour (1966), El discreto encanto de la burguesía (1972) y El fantasma de la libertad (1974). Volvió a España y realizó Ese oscuro objeto del deseo (1978).

Director de cine español. Cuando estudiaba en la Universidad de Madrid conoció a Salvador Dalí, con quien posteriormente realizó la película surrealista Un perro andaluz (1928). Poco después Buñuel dirigió el largometraje anticlerical La edad de oro (1930) y el documental Las hurdes, tierra sin pan (1932). Después de trabajar como productor de cine comercial en España y asesor técnico en Hollywood, emigró a México, donde dirigió Los olvidados (1950) y Nazarín (1958). Regresó a su país natal para realizar Viridiana (1961), que fue censurada en España por su sesgo anticlerical, pero internacionalmente ovacionada. Criticó la moralidad establecida en filmes como Bella de día (1967), Tristana (1970), El discreto encanto de la burguesía (1972) y Ese oscuro objeto del deseo (1977).
